PLANNING
Trek options
Vaccinations and
medications - There are no mandatory vaccinations for
entry into PNG. Anti-malarials are recommended.
Anti-inflammatory medications for sprains or muscular soreness and
antibiotics for infections are also strongly advised and make sure
your tetanus is up to date. Some people also choose to be immunised
for typhoid, cholera and hepatitis. Discuss this with your doctor.
Other personal first aid items should be packed though you can hire
a group kit from Kokoda Holidays.
Fitness
programme
The Kokoda Track is physically very
demanding even for the fit and active walker and so ample time must
be taken to prepare. A minimum of three months is
recommended, and longer if available. A checkup
with your health care provider is recommended to get the all
clear.
Walking is the
best form of training. Start slowly (eg 45 mins – 3 times per week)
and gradually increase the time of each session. (Remember, you will need to be
able to walk up and down steep hills with a pack for up to 6 hours
per day). Jogging, cycling or swimming are also recommended. The
main aims will be to strengthen the legs and to
improve cardiovascular fitness. If you are a member
of a gym, step training is
ideal.
Mimicking the conditions along the track
is the best form of training i.e. slowly introduce hill
walking and as you get fitter, begin to carry
weight in a pack. Don’t overdo the training too early! It
is easy to become overenthusiastic and develop an injury. And don’t
underestimate the physical difficulty of the trek. Remember that you
will be going into tropical heat and humidity and so the fitter you
are, the faster you will acclimatize to the
conditions.
Finally, most trekkers find Kokoda as
tough mentally as it is physically. You will need
to prepare yourself emotionally for such a sustained physical
effort.
